Sterling Cables

This is an old cable tower and is one of the last of its kind still left standing. Sterling Cables forms part of the Sterling Industrial Site and that is currently up for sale and redevelopment. I have never gained access to this gem and I’d love to! I’ve heard from the people who have visited this place that it is thick with pigeon guano (in other words, shit). I will enquire about an UrbEx visit soon and I will post the results both on YouTube and here.

On June the 12th I, along with my good friend Spod, was granted access to this tower. The entrance is a steel door around the back of the building that leads into an old car servicing garage. There is a small sort of building with a ladder that goes onto its roof and another ladder that takes you into the main tower itself. The first things you’ll see are countless dead pigeons and tons and tons of stinking pigeon shit. As I said in the note, you need protective gloves and a breathing mask. I was ever so glad that I had a mask and gloves!!!

To get up the tower, there is a rickety old iron staircase that takes you up about 20-30 feet above the floor. When you get up to the top, you’ll find windows and an old lift shaft (DON’T GO NEAR IT) and some old fibro-cement sheets. There is a ladder inside some kind of fibro-cement boxes that leads to somewhere higher in the tower. As I could not see anything to support the ladder, I did not climb it.

During the day it had been drizzling but whilst we were in the tower a massive rainstorm had kicked up. Rain lashed the already crumbling tower. Water was coming in through small gaps in the roofing and windows. It was also VERY windy out there… so much so that the metal pillars in the tower started to creak very ominously. When that started, we scarpered!

NOTE: ANYONE ENTERING THIS BUILDING WILL NEED SPECIAL GLOVES AND BREATHING MASK AS THERE IS A HIGH RISK OF ASBESTOS INHALATION OR CATCHING PSITTACOSIS FROM THE PIGEON GUANO. ALSO THE FLOORS RISK COLLAPSING. THE TOWER COULD VERY EASILY COME DOWN WITHOUT ANY WARNING.
